eco - Association of the Internet Industry, has published a member interview with Loadwise Co-founders Frederik Drewes and Tobias Schreiner on flexible grid connection agreements for data centers. Loadwise has been a member of eco since 2026.
The interview looks at what happens once a flexible connection agreement moves from contract to daily operation. Grid capacity in regions like Frankfurt and Berlin is constrained into the mid-2030s, which shifts the planning question from land availability to the connection itself. FCAs split that connection into a secured share and a curtailable one, and the interview covers what a site needs technically and operationally to hold up its end of that arrangement: forecasting its own consumption, quantifying how much load can shift and for how long, and building on measurement data that already exists in most facilities rather than new hardware.
The conversation also compares regulatory approaches across Europe, from Ireland's generation and storage requirements for new data centers to Fluvius' flexible connection contracts in Belgium, and what those different paths suggest for how Germany could design its own framework.
